Year 1

This week in gymnastics, Year 1 have been learning all about balance. The children explored low, medium and high balances, learning that a balance is when we hold our body still and controlled. They tried holding each balance for 5 seconds, focusing on good body shape and control.

The children learnt a straight balance with arms reaching up tall, a star balance with arms stretched out to the sides, and then challenged themselves with a dish and an arch balance. Working in small groups, they used these skills to create a sequence of six balances, making sure they included a variety of heights.

To finish the lesson, the children confidently articulated their learning, explaining why balance is important not just in gymnastics but in everyday life too – such as riding balance bikes and scooters, and walking in a straight line.
