Over the last two weeks, Year 4 have explored a range of drawing and printmaking techniques as part of their art unit. First, the children created wax-resist artworks by covering card with colourful wax crayon before painting over the surface with black paint. Once dry, they scratched into the paint to reveal the colours underneath, using hatching, cross-hatching and a variety of mark-making techniques to create tone, texture and contrast in their compositions.
Building on these skills, the children worked collaboratively to create large-scale prints inspired by their artwork from across the unit. They discussed composition, selected printing methods and experimented with different materials to produce patterns, textures and areas of contrast. Throughout the project, pupils developed their understanding of printmaking while learning how to share ideas, compromise and work together to create a final piece of artwork.
