HR Law and Basketball
From One Extreme to Another
I often comment on the variety within my job. This was highlighted today as I tackled a completely different aspects of school life.
I spent the morning at a training workshop which focussed on HR (Human Resources) procedures relating to employment issues. You have to remember that I trained as a teacher. When you become a Head, you find that you have to gain an understanding of employment law. In my first year of headship, I found myself in a situation where I had to sack an employee. This culminated in an employment tribunal where my actions were completely vindicated. You learn quickly! 16 years later, I found that I knew a lot of what was discussed this morning but there were still some aspects of law which were either new or just new to me. My son works for a law firm and I share his interest in this area.
I concluded my day by running a basketball club for yours 5 and 6. Do I have time for this? Not really, but running extra-curricular activities for children is something that I have done throughout my career and I’m not going to stop now. It is just brilliant to see children grow and shine in different areas and to see the confidence that this can develop.
There’s never a dull moment in my job.
